West Midlands Police & Crime Commissioner Simon Foster was delighted to unveil West Midlands Police’s new Coventry Police Museum within the heart of the city centre.
It opened yesterday (September 4) within Coventry City Council House on Earl Street and contains a range of fascinating police information, images and historical items.
A number of guests attended the opening ceremony alongside the PCC, including Chief Constable Craig Guildford, Coventry councillors, Coventry Mayor and the Coventry police commander.
PCC Simon Foster said: “I’ve seen the fantastic work that the team have done at Steelhouse Lane in terms of community engagement and the role that the museum can play for young people to educate and raise awareness of what policing is all about.
“It’s so very important that we preserve that history, that tradition, and that culture because unless we do that, we can never understand why policing is where it is today.”
Colleagues also welcomed Olive Parsons, who is the sister of a West Midlands Police officer who documented policing during the Blitz. Her dad was also a police officer in Coventry.
There’s been a museum in Coventry since 1957, having originally been based within the basement of Coventry Police Station.
When Coventry was named a City of Culture in 2021, the museum was moved to a premises on Hertford Street on a temporary basis.
The new museum is open Thursday and Friday between 10am and 2pm – subject to volunteer availability – and admission is free.
