Unsung heroes from across the West Midlands are being given their moment in the spotlight.

The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner has launched his Outstanding Citizens Awards 2019, celebrating those who make our communities safer and happier places to live and work.

David Jamieson is giving people the opportunity to show their appreciation to unsung heroes who are worthy of special recognition for outstanding acts of good citizenship.

The deadlines for nominations is 18th April 2019 and the ceremony will take place on 11th July 2019 where winners and runners-up will be announced.

There are three awards categories up for grabs including:

  • Outstanding Citizen
  • Outstanding Young Citizen (under 18s)
  • Outstanding Community Project

So if you know a tireless community campaigner or a member of the public who went above and beyond, nominate them now.

Commenting on the awards, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “This is our chance to say ‘thank you’ to those people who work to make the West Midlands a better place.

“Whether they are a long-standing community campaigner, someone who runs a worthwhile project or simply a member of the public who stepped up when the time called for it, nominate them now and ensure they get the recognition they deserve.”

Nominations are welcomed from anyone who knows of a volunteer, community member or community group that has shown consistent dedication to their neighbourhood, given up their own time to help others, contributed to community safety or helped to reduce crime and disorder.

The awards are now in their 7th year. Previous winners include:

Outstanding Citizen 2016: 94-year-old volunteer Mary Harvey from Kingstanding, who offers wisdom and leadership to the local area, fundraises for different charities and builds bridges within the community.

Outstanding Young Citizen 2018: Coventry Voice of Care Council, a group of young people in care, some aged as young as 9, who give up their free time to advise the authorities on how they can better look after vulnerable young people.

Outstanding Community Project 2017: Box Clever, a youth club run by former World Champion boxer Wayne Elcock in Solihull.
