Reason for Authority (Brief Summary for Publication) |
#POWERS | We will be using Section 60 powers across Walsall this evening and until tomorrow morning (Tues) due to a fear of potential violent disorder. Section 60 powers allow us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds. The powers will be in place tonight until 10am tomorrow and will cover the area of Walsall highlighted on the map. The Section 60 was put in place after a man was stabbed on Norfolk Place in Walsall shortly after 5.15pm today (17 March). The victim, in his 20’s, was taken to hospital with injuries which are described as life-threatening. We are in the early stages of our investigation. We will have officers patrolling in the area tonight to offer reassurance to the community. As always, our main focus is on keeping everyone safe. Inspector Phil Upton, Response Manager, at Walsall Police, said: “We don’t use section 60 powers lightly, but we will use all our powers to ensure the safety of people in the area. We will have increased patrols in the area and uniformed officers. “These powers allow us to stop and search people we may suspect may be involved in violence, or carrying weapons, without the need to have reasonable grounds. Our aim is to keep everyone safe.” |
