| #POWERS | We’ll be using Section 60 powers in a part of Birmingham city centre this evening following recent firework disorder. This allows us to stop and search people without the need for reasonable grounds. We’ve also got additional Section 60AA powers which enable us to demand the removal of face coverings being used as a disguise. It comes after recent disorder in the Bagot Street and Staniforth Street area and the powers will be in place until 7am tomorrow (2 November). Groups have launched fireworks in the street and from buildings, with some aiming towards police officers and police vehicles. We’ve made arrests and our enquiries are continuing. We won’t tolerate such appalling behaviour which we know is frightening for people and puts them at risk of harm. We have an investigation team reviewing footage and we will seek to prosecute anyone involved. We’ll have another tough focused policing operation in place over the coming days, to keep our communities safe.
