The West Midlands PCC’s Youth Commissioner for Coventry is hosting an event to provide young people with advice and support on getting a job.
The Options and Opportunities event was attended by representatives from Coventry City Council, Coventry University’s Enterprise Hub, Lyfeproof, Aspire4u and local businesses as well as the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Waheed Saleem.
This event is part of a wider campaign led by Deepti Sapkota which has focused on providing information to young people on their options for going into further education or employment.
Speaking at the event Deputy PCC Waheed Saleem highlighted the challenges that young people are now facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This campaign recognises the impact long term unemployment could have on young people and the potential link to more under 25s becoming involved in criminality.
Prior to this event Deepti has already hosted a workshop following on from results day, where they asked young people how they were feeling and listened to their concerns.
Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Waheed Saleem said: “Covid-19 has had a significant effect on our economy and this will affect the under 25s more than any other age group.
“This campaign led by our Coventry Youth Commissioners is a good example of young people working to make a positive difference in society.
“I am pleased that we have been able to support this campaign and I know it will make a positive difference to people.”
Youth Police and Crime Commissioner for Coventry Deepti Sapkota said: “Our campaign is about recognising the challenges that young people face in the current climate and provide helpful advice to them.
“We understand that young people will be adversely affected by the economic impact Covid-19 and we are committed to providing help and support to ensure that they understand what option are available to them so they can move forward with their lives.”
Youth Commissioners represent young people across the West Midlands. They are aged 18 and under. The job of the Youth Commissioner is to advise the Police and Crime Commissioner on issues affecting them and their peers.
Each Neighbourhood Policing Area has two elected Youth Commissioners serving two year terms.
