The Police and Crime Commissioner’s Active Citizens Fund has distributed £40,000 to good causes in Walsall.
A total of 12 schemes have been awarded between £500 and £5,000 after working with local police officers, One Walsall and Walsall Council.
The Active Citizens Fund sees criminals’ ill-gotten gains used for good in the community.
The 12 Walsall schemes are:
- Parents Cyber Safety – £3,340 for an online safety course for parents to ensure their children are safe online.
- Church Hill Litter Pick – £500 for fortnightly litter picks in the community.
- Protecting Migrants from Exploitation – £4,000 for a scheme to safeguard young EU migrants from child sexual exploitation and employment exploitation.
- Cultural Cooking – £4,240 for cooking classes in Birchills that are open to all members of the community to build tolerance and unity.
- Dreaming the Green – £5,000 for a new community artwork in Caldmore.
- Keep Chuckery Tidy – £5,000 for a project to reduce littering and fly-tipping.
- Report the Hate – £4,750 to tackle hate crime in Walsall.
- Neighbours Together – £2,350 to build community spirit in Goscote and Blakenall via family picnics, sports days, neighbourhood events etc.
- New Invention Community Tea Dance – £1,060 for two inter-generational tea dances in New Invention and Short Heath.
- Palfrey Pride – £3,797 to boost safety and neighbourliness in Palfrey via litter pick days and community events.
- Jembies Drum Café – £3,896 to work with young people and engage them in the arts.
- Mr T Project – £3,125 for self-defence and fitness classes for young people.
West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson announced the worthwhile projects at an event at Walsall College.
He said: “It is great to see ill-gotten gains helping community projects across Walsall. This cash will make a real difference to all active citizens in the borough.
“It is in equal measure heart-warming and inspiring to hear about all these wonderful projects and the good work that is going on in Walsall.”
PC Nick Morton, who is in charge of the Active Citizens Fund in Walsall, added: “The Active Citizens funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner has given a number of community activists in Walsall the opportunity to bring their community projects to life.
“We have had some fantastic innovative ideas that will make a real difference to communities in Walsall. Coupled with our unique partnership with One Walsall, Walsall College and Walsall Council, which offers support and guidance to all of the projects along with the opportunity to gain a personal level 3 qualification in Community Engagement.”
