Stop and Search: Section 60 Authorisations

Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 gives senior police officers powers to authorise use of stop and search without reasonable grounds where there is a risk of violence or it is believed that weapons are being carried.  In accordance with the Best Use of Stop and Search Scheme, such authorisations should come from an officer of Assistant Chief Constable rank or above.  The Best Use of Stop and Search Scheme also requires that information about instances where such powers are used is published.
